Comrade Nurudden Bello, a microbiologist and the Director of Womenhood School of Health Science and Technology in Kaduna State, North Western Nigeria, recently organized a sensitization program to educate students on how to prevent heat-related health problems during this year’s extreme heatwave.
In his speech, Mallam Bello stressed the importance of staying cool and hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
He explained that the aim of the sensitization was to raise awareness about the dangers of heatwaves, such as increased risks of diseases like minigeti, which could affect the local community during this year’s hot season.
He advised students to wear light, loose-fitting clothing, take cool showers, and use foot baths with cool tap water to stay comfortable in the heat.
As the director of African Climate Reporters (ACR) and the head of scientists representing 54 African nations, Mallam Bello also suggested using electric fans to help cool the body, especially when indoor temperatures rise above 39-40°C.
“Locally made hand fans can also be an effective way to stay cool in communities and informal settlements,” he added. “These simple tools can help protect people from extreme heat, which is having a negative impact on plants, animals, and other living organisms in our environment.”
He further encouraged students to open windows and doors if it feels hotter indoors than outside and to watch for signs of dehydration, such as thirst, dry mouth, tiredness, dark-colored urine, and passing less urine than usual.
In addition, Comrade Bello recommended that students stay informed by checking weather forecasts and heatwave warnings through TV, radio, or online platforms.
The director also provided practical tips for cooling homes, such as installing reflective coatings, insulation, and external window coverings like awnings, shade cloths, and blinds. Planting trees around homes for shade was another key recommendation.
Mallam Bello highlighted the importance of avoiding physical exertion during the heat, as working or exercising in hot conditions significantly increases the risk of heat-related health issues.
He also announced plans to establish climate clubs at the school. Which according to him These clubs will raise awareness about environmental issues and teach students the importance of sustainable practices. Through workshops, guest lectures, and field trips, students will gain a deeper understanding of ecological challenges and learn how to adopt environmentally friendly habits. Community engagement activities such as recycling drives and tree planting events will also be organized to involve the broader school community in protecting the environment.
Mallam Bello emphasized that climate and environmental clubs play a critical role in fostering sustainability within schools, helping students develop into environmentally conscious individuals ready to tackle future ecological challenges.
