In a joint effort to promote mental health awareness, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kaduna, Mental Space Foundation Africa (MSFA), and Global Insight organized a one-day sensitization workshop for students in Kaduna. The event was held at the Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa Hall and welcomed students from primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the state.
Speaking at the opening of the event, FIDA Kaduna Chairperson, Barrister Olufunke Abosede, emphasized the importance of mental health education, noting that mental well-being is a societal issue that affects people of all ages.
“We are here to educate students about mental health, because it impacts everyone. By creating awareness, we can better support students, teachers, parents, and the wider community,” she said.
Theme: “Healthy Mind, Brighter Future”
The workshop focused on the growing mental health challenges among young people, including anxiety, depression, and trauma—issues often worsened by academic pressure, social expectations, and economic hardship. Experts stressed that early education on mental health helps students recognize warning signs, seek help without shame, and understand available support systems.
“Mental health education can reduce stigma and empower students to take care of their emotional well-being,” Barrister Abosede added.
Also speaking at the event, Dania Sharon, a representative of Mental Space Foundation Africa, described her organization’s work in promoting mental health in schools and communities across the continent.
“Our mission is to normalize seeking help by breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. We aim to raise awareness and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on good health and well-being,” Sharon said.
She explained that the foundation is committed to educating youth and providing resources that support better mental health across Africa, particularly among teenagers and young adults.
A clinical psychologist also addressed participants, emphasizing the link between mental health and overall well-being. He encouraged schools to provide access to professional support, even in low-resource settings, through partnerships with mental health organizations.
The event concluded with an interactive session, where students shared their experiences and learned practical strategies to care for their mental health.
