Derick Ayelo Samson, a Geography student at Kaduna State University, alongside the Head of Communication and Strategies of African Climate Reporters, Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, paid a visit to one of Kaduna’s largest recycling sites to gain firsthand knowledge of how plastic and other forms of waste are collected, processed, and transformed into useful materials.
The visit was aimed at understanding the practical processes involved in waste recycling and highlighting the importance of proper waste management in protecting the environment.
The team observed various stages of the recycling process, from the collection and sorting of waste materials to their processing and conversion into reusable products.
The recycling facility is owned by Mallam Shehu Mai Gida Roba, whose work in the recycling sector contributes to reducing environmental pollution while giving discarded materials a new and useful purpose.
The visit also underscored the need for greater public awareness and support for recycling initiatives, particularly as cities continue to face growing challenges associated with plastic pollution and poor waste disposal.
For students, environmental advocates, and members of the public, such initiatives demonstrate that what is often considered waste can become a valuable resource when properly managed and recycled.
