In a move to foster unity and prevent conflict in Northern Nigeria, faith-based organizations have successfully trained 10,000 young individuals as peace ambassadors. This initiative was led by Pastor Dr. Yohanna Buru, General Overseer of the Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry.
The program, which spanned five years, aimed to engage the youth in peace and conflict prevention efforts. Pastor Dr. Yohanna emphasized the potential of the youth to contribute to these efforts through decision-making, social cohesion, and addressing root causes of conflict.
The training used social media platforms, campaigns in various settings, and places of worship to spread the message of peace. It focused on mobilizing communities and reducing tensions through intercultural and interfaith dialogue.
Mallam Gambo Abdullahi Barnawa of Kaduna also targeted the training of 10,000 youth as peace ambassadors in their communities. These efforts aim to address the root causes of conflict, such as poverty and unemployment, by providing economic opportunities for youth.
While challenges like a lack of opportunities and negative stereotypes hinder youth involvement in peacebuilding, efforts are ongoing to unlock their full potential in conflict prevention.
