A Geography student of Kaduna State University, Derick Ayelo Samson, and the Head of Communication and Strategies of African Climate Reporters (ACR), Ambassador Ibrahima Yakubu, have visited Hamza Abdullahi Dam in Unguwar Kaji NDC, Kaduna, to assess the condition of the more than 40-year-old dam and its surrounding environment.
The visit was aimed at gathering information on the environmental challenges facing the dam, particularly erosion, indiscriminate waste disposal, the emergence of dumpsites and the increasing encroachment of residential buildings towards the dam.
The team observed that growing human activities around the dam could pose environmental and safety concerns if urgent measures are not taken. They stressed the need for responsible waste management, effective erosion control and proper regulation of development around the dam.
As part of the way forward, they called on relevant government authorities to conduct regular environmental assessments of the dam, clear illegal dumpsites and establish proper waste disposal systems around the area. They also urged authorities to control further construction close to the dam and enforce existing environmental regulations.
They further recommended the planting of trees and vegetation around vulnerable areas to help reduce soil erosion, while drainage channels should be properly constructed and maintained to control stormwater runoff.
The team also called for increased environmental awareness among residents, encouraging communities to avoid dumping waste near the dam and to participate in protecting the area.
Samson and Yakubu stressed that protecting Hamza Abdullahi Dam will require sustained collaboration between government agencies, environmental organisations, researchers and residents. They said early action could help prevent further environmental degradation, protect the dam and ensure the safety and sustainability of communities around it.
