Ibrahima Yakubu, the Team Leader of the Network of Peace Journalists in Kaduna, has emphasized the pivotal role of media professionals in fostering peaceful coexistence and advancing the causes of justice and democracy for societal betterment.

Speaking during a round table discussion with media and peace-building networks in Kaduna State, Northwestern Nigeria, to commemorate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6th, as designated by the United Nations, Yakubu urged journalists to wield their influence responsibly. He stressed the importance of upholding principles such as truth, objectivity, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law in their reportage.

Yakubu cautioned against developing overly close ties with politicians and business figures, warning that such relationships could compromise journalists’ ability to fulfill their duties impartially and without bias.

Highlighting the significant impact of media narratives on public perception and societal harmony, Yakubu urged journalists to prioritize peace, unity, and development in their reporting. He underscored the need to avoid sensationalism and the incitement of violence, emphasizing the importance of promoting understanding and constructive dialogue.

Yakubu lauded the efforts of over 50 media organizations comprising the United Network of Peace Journalists in Kaduna, which have collectively contributed to transforming the state into a model of peace and unity through their commitment to peace journalism. These organizations have not only reported on peace-building efforts but have also provided training and mentorship to aspiring journalists, ensuring the perpetuation of responsible and impactful reporting.

As the “fourth relm” of government, Yakubu emphasized the significant role of the media in mitigating violence and promoting peace. He called on journalists nationwide to embrace the power of storytelling in fostering national unity and cohesion.

In conclusion, Yakubu’s message resonates with a call for responsible journalism that prioritizes the promotion of peace, understanding, and social progress. His words serve as a reminder of the transformative potential of the media in shaping a more harmonious and just society
