Indeed Niger Delta region cuts across nine states in southern Nigeria which include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers states. The region has emerged as one of the most ecologically sensitive regions in Nigeria. Oil and gas are the main sources of revenue from the region, accounting for about 97 percent of the country’s total export.

The region could experience a loss of 40% of its inhabitable terrain in the next thirty years as a result of extensive dam construction in the region
