The Niger Delta is Africa’s most important oil-producing region, and one of the most polluted places on earth.
Most farm land for agricultural production in the area has turned some thing else,as these problems of oil spills also affected the aquatic lives.
Indeed Niger Delta region cuts across nine states in southern Nigeria which include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers states. The region has emerged as one of the most ecologically sensitive regions in Nigeria. Oil and gas are the main sources of revenue from the region, accounting for about 97 percent of the country’s total export.
The region could experience a loss of 40% of its inhabitable terrain in the next thirty years as a result of extensive dam construction in the region
For decades oil spills have been damaging the environment and devastating lives in this part of Nigeria
Perhaps the most disturbing, is that oil exploration and exploitation in the Niger Delta is carried out without regard to international health and safety standards or observed minimum levels of protection to the environment from pollution arising from oil spillage and gas flaring.
